Nothing, Really…

I posted this as a thread comment over on latoc:

I guess I’ll stroll in here and toss in my 2 cents.

Civilization sucks. It was a nice idea, but look where it got us. Civilization has always been a function of growth, and all through history growth has been achieved by tapping resources. These days, we’re just really fucking good at that game.

But, we all know that the great puddles of dinosaur juice are running down to the point where “economic growth” is a thing of the past. That’s the new kid on the block of humanity’s history. And it’s really a bitch to accept that what has always – always always always been is no longer in operation. It’s imperative that you get there before you can go anywhere else. I believe most of the conflict on this forum stems from not accepting the new reality.

I’m okay with anyone’s choices about what they want to do as the new era comes about. I’m in the grow some turnips crowd, and far be it for me to disparage someone who has his resources invested in becoming a warlord, or even deciding (for some of the older folks) to just hang loose and watch the show since death will probably come within a 20-ish year period of Powerdown. The topic theme is Angry America – and I see that as a symptom of blaming everyone else for a personal failure to see the writing on the wall.

Many of us want to see civilization flat out die ASAP. Some so they can pull out the guns and take out suits and badges, some so that the salmon have a chance at survival. And some have some End Times rapture belief. The bottom line is that the resource base is rapidly shrinking, the Powerdown is real, and 99.99% of humanity is going to suffer horribly if we don’t voluntarily work hard as hell to lessen our footprint on this planet.

Most of us here aren’t stupid – we know exactly what feeds the destruction and our degree of participation. Shall we support each others’ methods of extraction from the machinery of civilization, cheer one’s ability to insulate themselves from the effects of resource depletion, or quibble about society’s #1 boondoggle (whatever tops your list)?

This is Life During the Oil Crash. Why argue the premise?

the comrade

I suppose I’m offering it up here just as some sort of summary on how I look at “things” these days. Maybe I unplugged the fan that was blowing wind in my sails. I’m not adrift… just don’t have any overriding desire to be anywhere but right here right now.

A wise man once said to me “people are who they are”. I’ve come to the conclusion that cultural inertia is the strongest force in human nature and what mystifies me the most is that I’m not following the mold I was raised in.

Must have been the drugs.

You know, Comrade, I’ve lost a bit of intrest in LATOC lately, seems everyone over there jumps on eachother’s shit WAY too much, and every thread ends up in a Vegan vs. Omnivore, anti-semite, rascist, “I’m better than you” drift. Seems a lot over there are missing the whole point. And the people who have boxes of MRE’s stocked in their freakin’ apartments in the middle of the fedghetto…let’s not even go there!!!
I’ve decided to become my own political party, I’m gonna be a “Leavemethefuckaloneian” My garden, my food, my livestock, my labor, my rewards, for MY family. Shut the f-up, unless you wanna be covered in manure, urine, dirt, and sweat everyday like I’ve chosen too.
We KNOW TSHTF, we’re already on the downhill slide, just most idiots haven’t seen it yet, societal blinders, perhaps. Too busy watching “Dancing With the American Idols Who Got No Talent”, or some other reality show. In my world, I’m livin’ a REAL reality show every f-ing day. When these others see the light, it’ll be too late for them, and who they gonna blame then?
There’s my 2 cents, but what the hell do I know?

I see some hopeful signs with some people, but I do live in a rural area that’s been on the downhill slide for a long time. It’s harder to ignore reality. Some people are working hard for more local food production. One 30 something guy I know has been picking the brains of those folks in their 80’s and 90’s. He’s got his debt free 20 acres. I’m helping him build his off grid home -for barter.

However, for every guy like that, there are hundreds who just want a big screen TV.

    Love your stuff simba…

I’ve been asking my relatives what they are going to do when the goobermint checks stop hitting the mailbox – they think I’m telling a joke – then they wait for the punchline – then I ask ’em when they are going to plant a garden – another blank stare – then I ask ’em about burning firewood to stay warm next winter – they gripe about their landlord not putting skirting around the trailer – I tell ’em to put some square bails around it and wet them down so they will freeze up tight – and put some clear plastic over the windows – then they gripe about paying 300 bucks {that arrives in the mailbox after they sit on their arse all month} a month to rent the trailer, as if it is ridiculously over-priced – this is when I give up and say goodbye, I gotta git home.

    Charlie,
I love your political party “Leavemethefuckaloneian”. Don’t worry though I will start my own chapter with membership of one.

I agree with Charlie on both his ‘political party’ and his assessment of LATOC. I remember when it was a good forum, before it was hijacked by a pack of rabid, foul mouthed feminists and metrosexuals with guns. Is “LMTFA” a good acronym for the party, or just TPOO (The Party Of One)?

A hugely informed and humorous post. I laughed my ass off as did the Handmaiden. I got another little parable for you. “As tight a grip you have on something is how tight a grip it has on you”. Write more often.

Well since you mentioned it, I went poking around the latoc again. Twice. I get pretty tired of that shit pretty fast. Beyond the utter dismissal of anyone unwilling to absolutely accept their party line, it’s a bunch of ‘you’re stupid – no you’re stupid’ type banter. About as pointless as reading the comments on the local crime stories in the local paper website.

That kind of shit just makes me want to rip on people and I really don’t need any more prompting.

I was wondering why the comrade was bothering with the latoc in the first place. It’s just the same old shit catered to what doomers might want to hear.

I did have a long tired pissed off screed but who want the hear that shit anyways? Fucking self-censorship.

Some good links get posted there at times – it’s a good springboard if you can keep from getting sucked in to the blather.
