Charlie sounds a bit beat down from his comment on the last post, but it gave me an idea for this one.
Few can just drop out – too plugged in to the system to disengage without a culture shock type meltdown. But there are a thousand small paper cuts that can annoy the piss out of the Big Purple Monster..
You give them their pound of flesh at property tax time, but you cut down on new product purchases to short ’em on sales tax. You pay for your tags but limit gas consumption taking away as much fuel tax as possible. Work for cash as much as you can leaving their 1040 vacuum nozzle feeling around like a blind worm. You let the bank make their pound of flesh off the overnight float on your deposits and use Bill Pay for everything and make ’em choke up some stamp change mailing a paper statement… while depriving them of 1 1/2% on every transaction via credit card.
Religiously “tithe” by paying 10% more at a local joint rather than supplicating at Wal-Mart. I spent $120 getting my mountain bike that was down to 3 gears and a half a brake fixed at a local bike shop rather than feed the consumer monster the same money on a new one. In my opinion the Grateful Dead stickers all over it was a factor.

Every bean you cook is a burrito you don’t buy. Every dollar you don’t have to earn is 50 cents straight out of the machine’s ass. We can starve the Beast without making changes too drastic to live with. They’re doing their utmost to bleed us dry – sock it right back at ’em.

I read your blog today then got in the truck to go home after work and turned on KACC. Shakedown Street was playing. I haven’t heard it on the radio since the 80’s. Just a little of that cosmic cross wiring. On to other things. I am currently trying to work as few hours as possible and still stay employed. There is no incentive for me to earn more money besides it frees up more family and garden time. The fall garden is starting out good and the spinach, carrots, lettuce and onions are waiting in the wings. I hope your remodel and doomsteaders are on target. I enjoyed the message Comrade and take care.

Nah, I’m not really beat down…well sort of. Just sick of the damned bullshit all the freakin’ time. Work is scarce, money is tight, (tighter than normal), people are idiots, etc. etc., Let’s just crash this damned plane and get it over with, how much longer we can keep “re-inflating” a ballon full of bullshit?
Besides, we already live like you’ve described, and avoid feeding “The Beast”, suppose you can’t go much lower when your already at rock bottom, eh?

Rock bottom is ten times better than quicksand…..

Hey, Comrade, have you seen this woman’s Debtor Revolt rant yet? Pretty cool:
http://www.redding.com/news/2009/sep/17/red-bluff-woman-launches-credit-card-revolt/ Take a look.

Her bank said – “Regarding credit card rate increases, customers are notified in advance of new rates and are given the opportunity to reject the new rate and pay off the balance under the existing rate.”
Ranter says – “”But who has $6,000 just lying around?” Minch said. “The bottom line is that because of the bailout, this is what is making people angry. The banks are the ones that created this whole economic disaster in the first place. The taxpayers bailed them out, albeit involuntarily.”
So she doesn’t understand the terms of her contract change? She doesn’t know she just has to make her same minimum payment till her balance is zero… and can’t charge more on the card mean while? She claims to be unaware that her rates doubled in January?
She’s a fuckin boob. I really don’t have much compassion for anyone carrying a 6K balance and not knowing what their rate of interest is.
Yeah, I’m jaded, Freeacre. But perhaps her video will push a few people over the top and make ’em say fuck the bank. Can you imagine what kind of video I’d produce to tell my bank to shove it bwahahaha!

So you can game the system huh?
The house always wins. That’s why you never see the fee on your receipt when you use the ATM from another bank. That’s why everyone so pleasing says: “[fucking] copay” instead of: “fee” when talking about medical insurance.
Every fucking phone plan, bank account, rental agreement has gotchas so far up your ass you wouldn’t be able to breath if they didn’t want you to.
Skip your cable bill if you like but skip paying your protection money and they toss your ass in jail for tax evasion. If everyone stopped paying their protection money then we’d be learning a foreign language to know how much to pay on the new plan.
It’s the haves versus the have-nots like it’s always been. A crime is going to take place one way or the other. Name your poison.

hey there Comrade.
I love your blog. Keep up the good fight, starving the beast is the only logical answer to the problem. Starve the parasite!

jim – pay it all, pay it always, pay it on everything… or drop out and go totally of grid, off the monetary system ident unknown and it’s all a pound of sand up a rat’s ass. Leads me back to my old standby – if 20% of folks would truly and completely boycott wal mart it would go out of business… then you start in on Target. As Kunstler says, saving three bucks on a hair dryer killed Main Street.
haha – I don’t really care if Main Street goes down either…

Let the moo cows shop at moo mart. What does it get you to bring down the moo mart anyway? Another Woolworths? J C Penney’s? Sears? Kmart? Sheee itt. Another salesman talking out of the side of his mouth will come along and people will buy that instead.
Moo mart sells shit because that’s what people buy. First rule of show business, and there’s no business like show business, is to give the people what they want.
I remember the old days of the Mac vs PC. The Mac was always a superior machine but it was cheaper too once you added the price of a mouse and the extra memory plus a graphics card to support an inferior GUI. Shit you couldn’t even get a GUI without buying the other stuff first. People bought PCs because all they saw was the price in the window or the price in the add. If the add didn’t say: “Keyboard included” guess what wasn’t included. They never considered what it would take to make it work for them like it was supposed to. In the end, the PC people paid more money and more time and more energy and still ended up with less.
Ford did not make the first or best car. Singer did not make the first or best sowing machine. McCormick didn’t make the first or best reaper. None of them were even the cheapest. They just sold things better. Moo mart sells. At least for now. Mussolini was popular in his time too.
Yeah I guess you can get off the grid. Anyplace take chickens for payment on property taxes? Any place you go you gotta pay your protection some how in some way. Whether you pay taxes to keep your property and to stay out of jail or pay that kid in TJ swinging the monkey wrench while he offers to watch your car.
Name your poison.
